Geological Significance
The rock is composed of Miocene-period sandstone, formed from the sediments of the ancient Pannonian Sea. Over millions of years, weathering and erosion sculpted the rock into a remarkable shape, inspiring local folklore. The surrounding area is also rich in biodiversity, making it an appealing destination for eco-tourism and geotourism.
Name Origin and Legends
The name Sárkányszikla (“Dragon Rock”) comes from the rock’s unusual shape, which locals believe resembles a dragon. According to legend, a terrifying dragon once roamed this region, spreading fear among the villagers. A brave hero eventually defeated the beast, and its body turned to stone—giving rise to the formation seen today.
These tales have been passed down through generations, enriching the spiritual and cultural heritage of the area.
Geotourism Value
Dragon Rock is easily accessible via local hiking trails, and it forms part of a scenic natural circuit that includes other nearby attractions such as the Morgó-gödör and KΕleány rock. The site is ideal for educational field trips, nature interpretation walks, and cultural events.
Thus, Sárkányszikla is not only a geological gem but also a cultural landmark—its natural beauty and mythical stories together create a rich and memorable visitor experience.
