More information
Skapér Beekeeping – Honey, as crafted by bees Did you know that honey doesn’t really spoil? Its properties are thanks to its high sugar content, very low water content, acidic environment, and the natural antibacterial substances it contains. Honey is nature’s treasure, and producing it is a privilege if one pays proper attention to their bees. The Skapér Beekeeping in Zalaszentgrót is a multi-generational family business now run by Zoltán Skapér, who has over five decades of experience. For him, beekeeping is not a hobby but a way of life: work, responsibility, discipline, and passion – all in one.
Second Generation
Zoltán received his first bee colony as a child. Although he worked in leadership roles in other fields for decades, bees were always “close” to him – first as a hobby, then as a side job, and finally as his main occupation, with bees and beekeeping taking centre stage. After his father’s early passing, he fully took over the family beekeeping business and began to forge his own path. Today, he not only produces honey but has also completed apitherapist training, runs an apitherapy house, and shares his expertise to support young beekeepers.
Bee-Friendly Beekeeping
Among the honeys produced by Skapér Beekeeping, you’ll find classic varieties – acacia, linden, rapeseed, sunflower, goldenrod, and mixed flower honey – but their uniqueness lies not only in their flavours but also in the way they are made.
Honey production here is the result of a conscious, nature-friendly, and bee-friendly approach. Zoltán completely rejects chemical treatments: he cares for the bees using only natural substances, such as oxalic acid, and regularly replaces the wax in the hives to prevent the accumulation of residues. The origin of the wax is always known and verified, and often he uses his own recycled wax.
Before extracting the honey, he measures its water content with a digital refractometer – the honey is only extracted once it has reached the ideal maturity. After extraction, the honey settles for at least four weeks, during which time wax residues and air naturally separate from it. It is then filtered through a fine 200-micron filter, without any additives, heat treatment, or anti-foaming agents.
The honey is then jarred, followed by a short resting period to ensure its texture is clear, smooth, and silky.
Apitherapy – Heal with Bees!
Zoltán’s property is not just a beekeeping site but also an experience centre: it is home to one of the country’s first apitherapy houses, where visitors can discover the healing power of bees. During apitherapy, guests relax on a special bed under which thousands of bees are at work – the vibrations, warmth, hive air, and essential oils from the bees naturally support the body. The method can be particularly effective for stress relief, easing respiratory issues, and promoting deeper sleep.
In addition to purchasing honey, you can book a guided visit in advance, where Zoltán is happy to share stories about the world of bees and the secrets of honey production, and he even welcomes small groups to take a closer look at the hives.
Product Overview
Acacia Honey
One of Skapér Beekeeping’s main products is acacia honey, made from the nectar of acacia blossoms found in the denser, clay-rich soils around Zalaszentgrót – giving it a taste and colour distinct from acacia honey from other regions. Its colour ranges from the usual pale yellow to light green, depending on the soil composition where the acacia grows.
The taste of acacia honey is mildly sweet, with a hint of vanilla, a long-lasting finish, and floral notes. You can use it daily as a sweetener in tea, lemonade, or coffee, spread on bread or mixed into porridge for breakfast, or as an excellent ingredient for baking. It also boasts outstanding antibacterial properties.
