Székely Calvary and Ugron Chapel
Located on the northern edge of Odorheiu Secuiesc, along the quiet forest trail leading to Mál Hill, the Székely Calvary uniquely combines spiritual reflection with the collective memory of the Székely community and contemporary artistic expression. The central element of the site is the Ugron Chapel, built in 1890 at the request of Ákos Ugron, based on the testament of his ancestor, Lázár Ugron. Originally intended as a burial chapel, the building still preserves the memory of the family’s history.

More information
Along the path leading to the chapel, there is a unique Way of the Cross (Calvary) with 14 stations, created by sculptor Walter Zavaczki. The stations are two-metre-tall steles carved from raw stone blocks, depicting key events in Székely history, from the Tatar invasions to more recent times. Each pillar features inscriptions and dates in Székely runic script, allowing visitors to journey not only through faith but also through historical identity.
The experience of the Székely Calvary is not only visual and intellectual but also deeply connected to nature. The trail follows a peaceful, shaded forest path, which is easily accessible on foot, even for families with young children. The site requires no infrastructural interventions or artificial elements, keeping its environmental impact minimal. As such, the Székely Calvary is an example of sustainable tourism: it not only preserves but also raises awareness, conveys values, and fosters community.
The Székely Calvary and Ugron Chapel are not among the most visited tourist destinations – yet they are places of profound significance. The tranquillity, the closeness to nature, and the simplicity and depth of the artworks make this site particularly valuable for those seeking authentic, meaningful experiences in the heart of Székely Land.
