Kazár

Kazár is a picturesque Palóc village in Nógrád County, located just 7 km from Salgótarján, nestled in the valley of the Kazár Stream, where the Mátra Mountains meet the Karancs–Medves region. With its unique geological features, rich folk traditions, and one-of-a-kind museums, the village has rightfully become one of the cultural centres of Palóc heritage. The most remarkable natural attraction of Kazár is its 20-million-year-old rhyolite tuff formation, created by volcanic activity in the Mátra region. The surface, shaped by water erosion into ridges and cone-like structures—referred to in geomorphology as a “badland”—is an extraordinary rarity in Europe. It can be explored during dry weather, but becomes slippery after rain, requiring caution. The village is famous for its Laska Festival, where visitors can taste the finest dishes of Palóc cuisine, especially *laska* (a traditional potato flatbread). The festival offers culinary delights, folk dance performances, and a bustling handicraft fair for all who attend.
