Salgó Castle is one of the most spectacular historic landmarks in Nógrád County, rising atop the 625-metre-high Salgó Hill, a volcanic basalt cone located just north of Salgótarján, at the edge of the Cserhát and the Karancs–Medves region. The approach to the castle offers a rare dual experience: not only does it lead through centuries of medieval history, but it also opens a window onto the geological past of the Carpathian Basin.
Historical Overview – A Modest Fortress with a Grand Legacy
The first written mention of Salgó Castle dates back to 1341. It is believed to have been built by the Kacsics clan in the wave of fortifications that followed the Mongol invasion of Hungary in the 13th century. Initially, it served more as a noble residence and refuge than as a major military stronghold.
In the 15th century, it passed to the Szécsényi, then the Losonczy family, who likely expanded the structure. Despite this, it remained a relatively small fortress, valued more for its strategic lookout position than for its defensive capabilities.
In 1554, the castle fell into Ottoman hands and was significantly damaged. Though Habsburg forces later reclaimed it, Salgó Castle lost its military relevance and by the end of the century it was abandoned. Today, the ruins of the keep, wall remnants, and a cistern stand as testament to the once-vibrant stronghold—now enveloped by nature.

Geological Treasures – A Castle on a Volcano
Salgó Hill was formed by Miocene-era volcanic activity. It is one of the most striking features of the Medves volcanic region. Its columnar basalt formations—formed by the slow cooling and cracking of lava into hexagonal columns—are globally significant examples of natural geometric structures.
The hill and its surroundings are part of the Novohrad–Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark, a cross-border initiative shared by Hungary and Slovakia to showcase their joint volcanic heritage. Visitors can explore a geo-thematic trail around the castle with interpretive panels, geological diagrams, and app-supported content that brings the basalt landscape to life.
Tourism Opportunities – Hiking, Views, and Discovery
he castle is accessible via well-marked hiking trails from Salgóbánya, requiring a moderately steep 30–40 minute climb through forests of black pine and beech. Along the way, scenic lookouts and educational panels provide natural rest stops and interpretive insight.
From the summit, the panorama is breathtaking:

-
On clear days, even the High Tatras can be seen on the horizon
