Sarkad
The town of Sarkad is rich in history and boasts a unique cultural heritage. In medieval times, the town was surrounded by marshes and waters, which provided natural protection for the local earthwork and later the castle, once connected to Gyula Castle. Although the castle no longer exists, its memory lives on through place names. Sarkad’s history is also intertwined with that of the Jewish community, whose members settled here in the early 19th century. They played a key role in boosting local trade and initiated numerous infrastructure developments, including the establishment of a synagogue and a Jewish cemetery. Unfortunately, most of the community was deported to Auschwitz during the Holocaust, but the Jewish heritage still lives on in the town, commemorating both the tragedies and achievements of the past. Today, Sarkad’s main attractions include the Almásy Mansion, the Trianon Memorial, and the beautiful Nine-Tower Calvinist Church.
