Apor Bastion

Towering above Băile Tușnad, on the slopes of Szurdok-tető, stands the picturesque Apor Bastion, which serves not only as a lookout point but also as a cultural landmark, playing an important role in the life of the region. Built in 1883, at the end of the 19th century, the structure was realised at the initiative of Baron Károly Apor, with the aim of providing a resting and viewing point for spa visitors – thus, the bastion never served a military purpose.

More information

The bastion is located at an altitude of 762 metres above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the Tușnad Gorge, the Olt River, the surrounding forests, and the rocky ridges of the Sólyomkő Nature Reserve. The path leading to it is well-maintained, with a marked hiking trail starting from the town centre, near the Apor Spring. During the short but eventful hike, visitors can experience the atmosphere of the region's forests, its fresh air, and its biodiversity.

The Apor Bastion was renovated in 2017, with a modern yet aesthetically landscape-fitting design. Inside, there is an exhibition space featuring archival photos, postcards, and maps that tell the story of Băile Tușnad's past, its spa culture, and the history of the lookout. The bastion has been equipped with solar-powered lighting, making it visible from the town at night – adding a special charm to the mountainside.

The Apor Bastion is an example of how a historic structure can be preserved and repurposed in a way that meets modern needs, sustainably. Reaching the bastion requires no vehicles or infrastructural interventions, ensuring that tourism here has a low environmental impact, while still offering a rich experience. The site is not only a lookout but also a symbol of how natural beauty, cultural heritage, and community values can come together in a conscious tourism development.
