Nyergestető Memorial Site

Located on a mountain pass between Harghita and Covasna counties in the Eastern Carpathians, the Nyergestető Memorial Site (literally: "Saddle Peak") commemorates a dramatic historical event from the mid-19th century. Here, a small group of local defenders—mostly from nearby villages—stood against a much larger invading army in a battle that ultimately claimed many lives.

Though the outcome was tragic, the site has since become a symbol of resistance, self-sacrifice, and the will to protect one’s homeland. Today, visitors can explore the open-air memorial park lined with carved wooden grave markers, known as kopjafák, a traditional funerary art form from the Székely (Szekler) community.

The memorial transcends national or political narratives. It speaks of universal values: courage in the face of overwhelming odds, collective memory, and the deep connection between people and their land. Set against the tranquil backdrop of the Carpathian landscape, Nyergestető offers not only a powerful historical reflection but also a peaceful natural setting for contemplation.
