Mohos Peat Bog

The Mohos Peat Bog (Tinovul Mohoș) offers a unique nature conservation experience in Székely Land, located at an altitude of 1,050 metres in the Csomád Mountains. It is the second crater lake, separated from Lake Saint Anne by a narrow ridge, and is a remnant of what was once a much larger crater lake. Today, an 80-hectare flat area is covered by a thick peat layer up to 10 metres deep – an area that was once four times larger than Lake Saint Anne. Mohos is home to Europe's botanical rarities: the round-leaved sundew – Transylvania's only carnivorous plant – as well as bog cranberry, red and black bilberry, bog rosemary, bog sedge, and over 20 species of moss can be found here.

Visit sustainably – only with a guide

The Mohos Peat Bog is a strictly protected habitat, so entry is only possible with a guide and requires careful movement, following wooden boardwalks. Tour schedules vary by season – from April to October, guided tours are typically available every hour, starting from the meeting point at the car park. During the peak season (July–August), there can be several tours a day, reaching the main part of the bog after approximately a 1.5-hour walk.

Sustainability and nature conservation

The Mohos area is part of the Mohos Nature Reserve, managed through the collaboration of the local community, the Pro Szent Anna Association, and Harghita County. The aim is to preserve the natural peat processes and ensure the sustainability of the visitor experience. The trail avoids the small lake areas and sensitive ecological zones, thereby guaranteeing the protection of the natural balance.

Why visit?

  • Because Mohos is a rare European ice age relic habitat, with pristine peat layers and dense vegetation.

  • Because the walk along wooden boardwalks on a nature conservation trail minimises environmental impact, ensuring our tour does not harm the environment.

  • Because during the visit, guests enjoy a guided experience based on scientific information.

  • Because Mohos can be visited in a way that ensures environmental protection is not just a promise but a meaningful experience.
