More information

In the heart of the Bükk Mountains, next to the Palotaszálló, lies Hungary's tallest waterfall, the stunning Lillafüred Waterfall, cascading 20 metres down into the terraced hanging garden. Fed by the Szinva Stream, this natural wonder with its impressive size attracts hikers year after year. From the Palotaszálló, you can descend via stairs into the hanging garden, where the walkway offers a perfect view of the waterfall, or for the more adventurous, you can get up close. József Attila even mentions this unique location in his famous Ode, and in winter, when it freezes, it transforms into magical ice formations, as if stepping into a fairytale world. However, the creation of the waterfall was not a natural process. In the 1920s, during the construction of the Palotaszálló, it was formed based on an idea by Count István Bethlen to create new attractions in a country deprived of its natural beauties. The Szinva Stream was diverted to make way for the hotel and the waterfall, resulting in the cascade we know today. Although the water flow is seasonal, a pump installed in Lake Hámori ensures that it remains a spectacle even during dry periods. The walking path around the waterfall offers numerous viewpoints where nature lovers can admire the cascade and the surrounding hanging garden. The Lillafüred Waterfall provides a unique sight in every season, whether it's the lush greenery of summer or the icy wonders of winter. This extraordinary natural treasure has rightfully become one of the area's most popular attractions.
