Mohos Peat Bog
The Mohos Peat Bog (Tinovul Mohoș) offers a unique nature conservation experience in Székely Land, located at an altitude of 1,050 metres in the Csomád Mountains. It is the second crater lake, separated from Lake Saint Anne by a narrow ridge, and is a remnant of what was once a much larger crater lake. Today, an 80-hectare flat area is covered by a thick peat layer up to 10 metres deep – an area that was once four times larger than Lake Saint Anne. Mohos is home to Europe's botanical rarities: the round-leaved sundew – Transylvania's only carnivorous plant – as well as bog cranberry, red and black bilberry, bog rosemary, bog sedge, and over 20 species of moss can be found here.

More information
The Mohos Peat Bog is a strictly protected habitat, and access is only permitted with a guide and with careful movement, via wooden boardwalks. Tour schedules vary by season – from April to October, guided tours are organised approximately every hour, starting from the meeting point at the car park. During the peak season (July–August), there can be several tours a day, with the main part of the bog reached after about a 1.5-hour walk.
The Mohos area is part of the Mohos Nature Reserve, managed through the collaboration of the local community, the Pro Szent Anna Association, and Harghita County. The aim is to preserve the natural peat processes and ensure the sustainability of the visitor experience. The trail avoids the bog pools and sensitive ecological zones, guaranteeing the protection of the natural balance.
-
Because Mohos is a rare Ice Age relic habitat on a European scale, with pristine peat layers and dense vegetation.
-
Because the walk along the wooden boardwalks is a nature conservation trail, minimising environmental impact, so your visit does not harm the environment.
-
Because during the visit, guests enjoy a guided experience based on scientific information.
-
Because Mohos can be visited in a way that ensures environmental protection is not just a promise but a meaningful experience.
