More information

The Zsófia Lookout Tower, one of Lillafüred's iconic landmarks, preserves over 120 years of history. The first countryside lookout tower, built in 1900, was initiated by the Borsod Bükk Division of the Hungarian Tourist Association, with construction costs covered by charity balls and the rental of boats on Lake Hámor. The tower was named after Countess Zsófia Teleki, founder of the Bükk Association, while Lillafüred itself was named after Zsófia's daughter, symbolically ensuring that the mother always watches over her daughter. The lookout tower became a popular tourist destination, renowned for its romantic atmosphere and the stunning views from the ridge. Although it was demolished in the 1950s, the idea of restoration was revived, and in 2022, it was reconstructed in its original style by Északerdő Zrt. The base of the tower is made of sturdy stone, its structure consists of larch beams, and its impressive dome rises like a crown atop the roof. The tower is located on the 390-metre-high Dolka Hill and can be reached via a 700-metre serpentine path starting from the picturesque Upper Hámor. The "All Around the Canopy" educational trail's information points provide insights into the area's natural treasures. In spring, blooming wildflowers, including the rare violet helleborine and mysterious bird's-nest orchids, add colour to the landscape, while in autumn, the vibrant foliage of various tree species enchants visitors. The Zsófia Lookout Tower and its surroundings offer numerous natural and cultural attractions, unforgettable panoramas, and caves and stream valleys waiting to be explored. Since its rebirth, the lookout tower has become an indispensable part of Lillafüred's charm.
