Csíksomlyó Pilgrimage 2026
The Csíksomlyó Pilgrimage is the most significant spiritual and national event for Hungarians, attracting hundreds of thousands of believers to the Transylvanian landscape every Pentecost. The tradition dates back to the 15th century when the Székelys made a vow: in gratitude for preserving their Catholic faith, they would honour the Virgin Mary with an annual pilgrimage.
The heart of the event is the saddle between the Kis- and Nagysomlyó Hills, where the festive mass is celebrated at a monumental outdoor altar amidst the embrace of nature. Pilgrims gather not only for religious devotion but also to experience a sense of national unity that transcends borders, while paying their respects before the famous, miracle-working statue of the Virgin Mary in the pilgrimage church. The unique atmosphere of the event is shaped by groups dressed in traditional folk costumes, religious hymns, and the quiet power of collective prayer, which holds symbolic significance for the entire Carpathian Basin.
