Bálint Bársony – Attila Lőrinczy swing musical
It's 1938, and we're in New York, aboard the luxury ship La Paz. On this ocean liner bound for Monte Carlo, we witness the fateful and turbulent meeting of a workaholic, disillusioned young businesswoman and a charming adventurer. The ship's deck is populated by peculiar and memorable characters: Tony's fiancé, a decadent aristocrat; a brutal wife and her timid, fearful husband; a hesitant secretary whose life is turned upside down not once but twice by a Tibetan singing bowl; and Tony's irrepressibly lively mother, who is determined to appear younger than her own daughter.
In this world, everyone is running from something or chasing someone. High stakes are at play as the characters toy with each other's emotions. All of this unfolds to the backdrop of swing and jazz, the golden age music that fills the luxury ship with life.
This former audience favourite will be revived on the Veres 1 Theatre's repertoire from 2025. Based on the play of the same name by popular 1930s playwright Károly Aszlányi, the libretto and lyrics are written by Attila Lőrinczy, with music composed by Bálint Bársony, an Artisjus and Fonogram award-winning composer and saxophonist. American Comedy is a story brimming with humour from start to finish, newly directed by Károly Peller.
