More information

The Lillafüred Forest Railway, better known as LÁEV (Lillafüred State Forest Railway), is one of Hungary's most popular narrow-gauge railways, cherished by hikers for its stunning route and the picturesque landscapes of the Bükk Mountains. The railway's history spans over 100 years and is closely tied to the economic challenges following the Treaty of Trianon, when making the most of the country's remaining resources became essential. Its first service began in 1920, running through the Szinva and Garadna Valleys, originally serving primarily for freight and timber transport. Later, with the development of Lillafüred as a tourist destination, passenger transport also gained significant importance. Over the years, the railway has transported not only timber from the Bükk forests but also local residents and visitors. Attractions along the route, such as Lake Hámori, the Mély Valley Viaduct, or the Trout Farm, offer a unique experience for those travelling by the little train. Passengers can stop at the enchanting Lillafüred station or near the Ancient Furnace, where they can enjoy a full day of hiking. A unique aspect of the LÁEV Forest Railway's history is that its rolling stock still includes nearly century-old passenger carriages, which continue to serve tourists to this day. Since the 1990s, new developments and renovations have helped maintain the railway's significance as a tourist attraction. The main section of the railway line is operational year-round, offering special programmes for visitors, particularly on the Mahóca branch line, which entices nature lovers with occasional special trains into the wild beauty of the Bükk Mountains.
