Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church

Hévíz's modern church, the Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, was built based on the designs of János Bocskai with the support of the local community over three years. It was consecrated on 9 September 1999, the 'Day of Nines', by Archbishop József Szendi.

More information

The church's seven towers symbolise the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. Of the four bells, two were donated by the faithful in honour of Saints Peter and Paul, while the other two were transferred from the previous church.

The harmonious blend of modern architecture and traditional style is also reflected in the interior: warm wooden panelling, colourful stained glass windows evoking a Gothic style (created by Endre Simon), and outstanding works of art adorn the church.

On the sanctuary wall, a 200-year-old cross can be seen, while on either side of the altar stand bronze statues by László Marton – Christ and Our Lady of Hungary. The walls are decorated with enamel artworks by László Morvay. In front of the church, a 5-metre column features Gergely Gál's sculpture titled "Angel", and on the surrounding hill, visitors are greeted by memorials to Saint Elizabeth of the Árpád dynasty, Count István Széchenyi, and Saint Stephen, among others.

The church has a capacity for 1,000 people and, thanks to its excellent acoustics, regularly hosts organ concerts. It serves not only as a sacred space but also as a cultural hub, playing a significant role in the life of Hévíz.
