More information
In the land of Riesling, anything can happen, but one thing is certain: a wine tasting full of experiences awaits you in the hidden corner of the Keszthely Hills.
A secret haven in the Balaton Uplands wine region
The Rezi vineyard, located just ten minutes from Keszthely, is not just a hillside on the border of the Balaton Uplands and Zala County, but a unique little world that locals lovingly call the Land of Riesling. This name is no coincidence. For decades, Italian Riesling has been a defining grape variety in the area, yet it takes on a distinctive character compared to other wine regions in Hungary.
The region boasts an exceptional microclimate: the south-facing slopes are ideal for grape growing, and the proximity to the Alps makes the area wetter than average. The nearby Lake Balaton and the Zala Hills contribute to balanced humidity, cooler nights, and a longer ripening period – all of which enhance the wines' refined acidity and aromatic richness.
What makes the Rezi vineyard truly special is that it is home to small-scale, artisanal wineries rather than industrial-scale operations. Winemakers personally tend to the vines, taste, ferment, and bottle their wines, each employing their own unique grape-growing and winemaking techniques. Alongside classic varieties like Italian Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Blaufränkisch, more and more winemakers are planting rare or traditional Hungarian varieties such as Nektár, Zengő, and Rozália.
Bakos Winery – From piano to Riesling, bringing Rezi to the world
If you're looking for a story to accompany your glass of wine, Bakos Winery is the perfect destination. Rezső Bakos, a pianist who travelled the world, returned home to settle in Rezi, where he combines his passion for wine with music, hospitality, and homemade dishes.
Rezső – who made his first wine at the age of nine with the support of his grandfather – sees winemaking not just as a craft but as a complex gastronomic experience. He personally participates in the wine tastings, playing music, sharing stories, cooking, and offering his guests his own wines.
The wines are crafted from both newly planted and inherited vineyards in various parts of Rezi, each with different soil characteristics but cultivated with the same care. The vineyards are managed with an organic approach: no herbicides or systemic pesticides are used, and all green work is done by hand. The wines – including Italian Riesling, Irsai Olivér, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Blaufränkisch – are aged partly in oak barrels and partly in stainless steel tanks, using modern technology while adhering to traditional methods.
In 2025, the winery once again won the Wine of the Land of Riesling title with its 2024 vintage Rezi Riesling Barnabás.
