In 2017, a peculiar celestial object passed through the Solar System. The unusual shape, strange trajectory, and intriguing behaviour of 1I/‘Oumuamua raised the question for many: was it of natural origin, or was it sent by an alien civilisation? The debate continues to this day.
A renowned professor at Harvard University has been investigating whether we might have encountered an artificial object. More interstellar visitors have since arrived: 2I/Borisov in 2019, 3I/ATLAS in 2025. Are these also “just” comets and asteroids – or do they hold something more?
The lecture will cover:
- how a Solar System object can become an interstellar wanderer,
- why 1I/‘Oumuamua shook the global scientific community,
- how science addresses "ufological" questions,
and what missions are set to launch soon to better understand these mysterious objects – such as the European Space Agency's Comet Interceptor probe, launching in 2029.
