Got a whole week? Discover Miskolc and its surroundings!
A whole week in Miskolc? There’s more to experience than you might initially think, and you can even explore three UNESCO World Heritage Sites while staying in Miskolc the entire time! Mountains, caves, waterfalls, unique baths, historic districts, exciting culinary adventures, and the natural wonders of the Bükk await you. With seven days, there’s no need to rush – you’ll have time for active recreation, relaxation, and even a few trips further afield! Miskolc is the ideal starting point for discovering the surrounding region. Book accommodation for a whole week and enjoy a new experience every day!
Day 1 - Miskolc’s historic city centre and Avas
Start your exploration in Miskolc’s historic city centre! Stroll along Széchenyi István Street, discover Szinva Terrace, and enjoy the city’s charming squares and architectural sights. If you’re interested in culture, visit the Herman Ottó Museum or the Actor’s Museum, where you can learn about the history of theatre in Miskolc.
In the afternoon, head towards Avas! The Avas Reformed Church, the historic wine cellar row, and the Avas Lookout Tower showcase one of Miskolc’s most fascinating districts. For a lesser-known spot, visit the Avas Arboretum.
End your day at the Avas Lookout Tower with a sunset view, offering a stunning panorama of the city and surrounding mountains. If you’re here on a Friday or Saturday, enjoy a glass of Bükk wine at one of the panoramic wineries on the Avas cellar row while admiring the illuminated cityscape.
Day 2 - Lillafüred and the natural wonders of the Bükk
Dedicate your second day to nature! Take the Lillafüred State Forest Railway into the Bükk and explore Lillafüred’s most famous attractions. The Palace Hotel, the Hanging Gardens, the Hámori Lake, and the waterfall are all close to each other, so you can enjoy plenty of experiences with just a pleasant walk. Visit the Anna Cave and the St. Stephen’s Cave, and if you’re up for it, try the Lillafüred Chairlift Park!
There are plenty of other activities to choose from in the area. The Miskolc Zoo offers engaging entertainment for families and animal lovers, while the Szeleta Park Visitor Centre introduces you to the Bükk’s natural, geological, and prehistoric treasures.
If you’re interested in industrial history, visit the Fazola Furnace in Újmassa, also known as the Ancient Furnace, and the nearby Massa Museum. Of course, you can’t fit all these activities into one day, but during a week-long holiday, you’ll have the chance to return to the Bükk!
Day 3 - Rejuvenation in Miskolctapolca
Spend your third day relaxing and enjoying water adventures! In Miskolctapolca, you can choose between two very different bathing experiences. Alongside the pools and sauna world of the Ellipsum Adventure Bath, the Cave Bath, built into natural cave passages, offers a truly unique bathing environment.
If you’re after something more active, try the bobsleigh track, the adventure park, or the electric go-kart track, and take a stroll around the Ancient Park and the boating lake. Don’t try to squeeze everything into one day! During a week-long getaway, you can try both baths and still have time for the other attractions in Miskolctapolca.
Day 4 - Panoramas, stars, and discoveries in the Bükk
The Bükk offers so much to explore that one day of hiking won’t be enough!
If you love hiking, head to the Zsófia Lookout Tower, which offers breathtaking views of Lillafüred and the surrounding mountains. The Bükk’s trails range from easy forest walks to more challenging hikes.
For a completely different experience, visit the Bükk Starry Sky Park near Répáshuta! With its planetarium, interactive exhibits, and telescope demonstrations, you can delve into the secrets of the universe. You can combine your visit to the star park with another trip to Lillafüred or dedicate an entire day to discovering the lesser-known natural treasures of the Bükk.
Day 5 - Three World Heritage Sites and a cross-border city tour from Miskolc
If you’re spending a whole week in Miskolc, it’s worth dedicating a day to exploring other attractions in the area. From Miskolc, you can reach three UNESCO World Heritage Sites on day trips, or even fit in a sightseeing trip to Slovakia!
TOKAJ – WORLD-FAMOUS WINES AND HISTORIC CHARM
About an hour’s drive from Miskolc lies Tokaj, the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Tokaj Wine Region. Stroll through the historic town centre, explore the area where the Bodrog and Tisza rivers meet, and visit a local winery to sample the world-famous Tokaj wines.
AGGTELEK – UNDERGROUND WONDERS OF THE WORLD HERITAGE
About an hour’s drive from Miskolc, the Aggtelek National Park and the world-renowned Baradla Cave await. The UNESCO World Heritage Aggtelek Karst cave system features vast underground chambers, stunning stalactite formations, and guided tours of varying lengths. Above ground, you can explore the natural beauty of the karst landscape. Be sure to check the cave tour schedules in advance.
KOSICE – A CROSS-BORDER CITY TOUR
Did you know that just about an hour’s drive from Miskolc, you can stroll through the historic centre of Kosice in Slovakia? Discover the charming Main Street, admire the monumental St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral, the theatre building, and the historic palaces of the city centre. Stop by a café and soak in the city’s atmosphere! Whichever trip you choose, you can return to your accommodation in Miskolc in the evening, ready for another day of adventures.
HORTOBÁGY – THE ENDLESS PLAIN
About a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from Miskolc lies the Hortobágy National Park, whose cultural landscape is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Discover the famous Nine-Arch Bridge, learn about the traditions of pastoral farming, and, if possible, join an organised programme on the plain! The Hortobágy landscape, native Hungarian animal breeds, and traditional shepherd culture offer a completely different experience compared to the forested mountains of the Bükk. Hortobágy is a longer day trip but fits comfortably into a week-long stay in Miskolc.
Day 6 - Secrets of Miskolc and Bükk gastronomy
After six days, you’ve already seen a lot of Miskolc, but there are still fascinating stories and culinary experiences to discover! Join one of the Secrets of Miskolc themed experience programmes and see the city from a whole new perspective. The programme following Déryné’s footsteps takes you into the world of theatre, while the Avas wine cellar tours introduce you to the history of the historic cellar row and Bükk wines.
If you’re interested in the intersection of nature and gastronomy, the Edible Forest experience programmes are also a great choice. Combining the Bükk’s forest ingredients, local cuisine, and the closeness of nature, these experiences go beyond a traditional restaurant visit.
Throughout the day, try out several Miskolc restaurants! Dishes based on local and seasonal ingredients, Bükk wines, and the city’s diverse dining spots are worth a culinary exploration in themselves. Be sure to check the schedules of themed programmes in advance, as not all experiences are available every day.
Day 7 - Your day in Miskolc
Make your last day entirely your own! There’s bound to be a place you haven’t visited yet or one you’d love to return to. Perhaps after the Cave Bath, you’d like to try the Ellipsum Adventure Bath, or vice versa. Maybe during your trip to Lillafüred, you didn’t have time for the chairlift, the zoo, or one of the caves.
If you’re craving more nature, choose another hike in the Bükk, or if you prefer to relax, spend a peaceful day at the bath and end your holiday with a lovely dinner. And if you’ve fallen in love with Miskolc so much that you don’t want to leave, the surrounding area offers even more places to explore for additional days!
In a week, you can discover Miskolc and the Bükk’s most famous sights, hidden treasures, unique experience programmes, and even three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The best part is that you don’t need to find new accommodation every day – from Miskolc, you can comfortably explore the region and return to your familiar base each evening.
