Orthodox and Baroque Masterpieces: From Icons to Twin-Towered Churches

The city tour begins at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, renowned for housing Central Europe's largest iconostasis. This 16-metre-tall masterpiece, depicting 87 scenes from the life of Jesus, offers a unique insight into the richness of Orthodox religious art.

The 18th-century Downtown Reformed Church, also known as the Rooster Church, is one of the defining classical buildings of Miskolc's historic centre. Its tower houses the city's largest bell, the Eszter Bell, cast in memory of the young Bató Eszter who passed away prematurely. The bell still rings on special occasions. Nearby is the Nyilas Misi House, which features a memorial room preserving the history of the Bató family, further enriching the cultural significance of the area.

Our next stop is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, located in Heroes' Square. This twin-towered Baroque church, built in the 18th century, is the largest Catholic ecclesiastical building in the city and a prominent feature of Miskolc's skyline.

Tracing Jewish Heritage: Remembrance and a City Walk to Avas

The walk also includes a visit to the Miskolc Synagogue, designed by Ludwig Förster. Memorial plaques at the site honour the Jewish community of Miskolc and its surroundings, who were deported in 1944. This part of the programme recalls a poignant chapter in the city's history.

The route continues through the city centre towards Avas, bringing to life the iconic streets, squares, and stories of Miskolc. The programme provides insights into the past and present of everyday urban life while connecting the enduring memories of various sacred sites.

Miskolc's Oldest Church: A Meeting of Gothic Architecture and Religious Diversity

The final stop of the tour is the Avas Reformed Church, the oldest church in Miskolc. Its unique feature is its entirely wooden roof structure, built without any metal components, making it a remarkable example of Hungarian ecclesiastical architecture.

The "In Search of Sacred Places" walk offers a comprehensive experience where religious heritage, built environment, and urban stories come together to complement each other. Participants gain a broad understanding of Miskolc's diverse past and cultural identity while enjoying an enriching guided city tour.
