In the footsteps of holy places

Discovering the sacred treasures of Miskolc

This thematic walk takes visitors into the unique world of Miskolc's historic city centre, where within just a few hundred metres, different religious traditions, architectural eras, and layers of history converge. During the programme, participants will explore the city's spiritual and cultural heritage through the emblematic sites of various denominations.

The starting point of the city tour is the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, renowned for housing Central Europe's largest iconostasis. This 16-metre-high masterpiece, depicting 87 scenes from the life of Jesus, offers a remarkable insight into the richness of Orthodox religious art.

Our next stop is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Minorite Church) at Heroes' Square. Built in the 18th century in Baroque style, this twin-towered church is the largest Catholic ecclesiastical building in the city and a defining feature of Miskolc's skyline.

During the walk, participants will also visit the Miskolc Synagogue, designed by Ludwig Förster. The commemorative plaques at this site honour the Jewish community of Miskolc and its surroundings, who were deported in 1944, making this part of the programme a poignant reminder of a tragic chapter in the city's history.

The route continues through the city centre towards Avas, bringing to life the iconic streets, squares, and stories of Miskolc. The programme provides a glimpse into the past and present of everyday urban life while connecting the enduring memories of various sacred sites.

The final stop of the tour is the Avas Reformed Church, the oldest church in Miskolc. The building's unique feature is its entirely wooden roof structure, constructed without any metal components, making it a remarkable example of Hungarian ecclesiastical architecture.

The "In the footsteps of holy places" walk offers a comprehensive experience where religious heritage, the built environment, and urban stories complement each other. Participants gain an in-depth understanding of Miskolc's diverse past and cultural identity while enjoying a meaningful, guided city tour.

IMPORTANT: The "In the footsteps of holy places" thematic walk is currently in preparation due to ongoing renovations at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. The work is expected to be completed within two months, after which the programme will be available to visitors.
