Historic wine cellar rows on the slopes of Avas
From Miskolc's City Centre to the Avas: A Cultural and Culinary Journey Through Time
This themed experience tour takes participants from the historic city centre of Miskolc to one of the city's most atmospheric areas, the Avas, where the past and present blend in a unique harmony. During the programme, the urban walk is closely intertwined with a culinary experience, offering participants a comprehensive insight into Miskolc's cultural and wine heritage.
City Centre Icons: A Walk Through History and Culture
The walk starts in front of the Tourinform Office and passes through the historic city centre, taking in the area around Szinva Terrace and the building of the Miskolc National Theatre.
Along the route, not only will you see the city's iconic landmarks, but you'll also hear the stories that have shaped Miskolc's daily life, literary and cultural scene.
The Avasi Wine Cellar Row: Centuries-Old Cellars and the Heritage of Miskolc's Wine Culture
The bustling city centre is quickly replaced by the calmer, nature-infused environment of the Avas. The narrow streets of the Avasi Wine Cellar Row, with its centuries-old cellars and press houses, reveal a unique world that tells the story of Miskolc's former wine trade and production. The area is home to nearly 800 cellars, whose histories are closely tied to the city's development. The memories of the former entertainment district, its literary connections, and personal stories further enrich the experience.
A Wine Experience in the Heart of the Avas: Tasting at Local Wineries
As part of the programme, several local wineries offer tastings, allowing participants to discover the distinctive flavours of the wine region and the traditions of local winemaking. Throughout the tour, the culinary experience and historical background complement each other, providing an opportunity to uncover the stories behind the wines.
A Panorama Above the City: From the Avasi Lookout to the Historic Churchyard
At the end of the walk, participants arrive at the Avasi Lookout, where the city panorama unfolds from a unique perspective. From here, the route leads back to the city centre via the Avasi Reformed Church and the historic cemetery, heading towards Erzsébet Square.
The programme is also available in English, German, Russian, Polish, and Finnish, for both individual and group tourists.
After the historic city centre walk, the unique atmosphere of the Avasi Wine Cellar Row and wine tasting complete the experience.
