Hajnáčka
Ajnácskő is a charming village named after the Turkish-derived Hungarian personal name "Ajnács." According to legend, the village commemorates Hajnácska, the daughter of Chieftain Huba, who gifted the surrounding area to her after the Hungarian conquest. Dominating the landscape is the basalt hill topped by castle ruins, one of the region's most significant natural and cultural landmarks. This volcanic rock formation provides sustainable opportunities for geological and historical studies, as well as nature-based tourism activities that respect local heritage. The unique crater located on the volcanic cinder cone of Ragács serves as a sustainable geotourism attraction, offering visitors immersive nature experiences and environmentally conscious educational activities. Fossil remains of prehistoric mammals discovered near the village further enhance its archaeological and conservation significance. The nearby Pogányvár, once home to a Celtic settlement, represents an important historical archaeological site contributing sustainably to the cultural tourism of the area. Although the therapeutic bath at Csevice-puszta ceased operations in the 19th century, current sustainable tourism development initiatives could explore opportunities for its reinterpretation or commemorative presentation. Ajnácskő’s architectural heritage includes notable landmarks such as an 18th-century church and a classicist castle built in 1820. Especially significant is the Roman Catholic church designed by István Novák, an architect awarded the prestigious Ybl Prize, consecrated in 1995. Its foundation stone was laid by Pope John Paul II in 1991. Ajnácskő consciously aims to sustainably preserve its natural and cultural heritage, offering tourism experiences that contribute to the long-term well-being of the local community and the achievement of environmental sustainability goals.
