What are the must-see attractions in Miskolc?

In Miskolc, it’s almost a must to visit the Ellipsum Adventure Bath in Miskolctapolca, the seasonal Ellipsum Beach Bath, and the Kagyló Beach, which offers six pools, a sauna world, and weekend sauna programmes in the outdoor area of the Cave Bath.

A must-do activity for both children and adults is the train ride to Lillafüred, where you can stroll through the stunning hanging gardens or explore two visitor-friendly caves. The interiors of the Anna Cave and St. Stephen’s Cave are truly captivating!  

In the city centre, don’t miss Miskolc’s major museums. Visit the Pannon Sea Museum and the Gallery in the main building of the Herman Ottó Museum, and on the pedestrian street, stop by the Miskolc Gallery Rákóczi House! The unique Holy Trinity Orthodox Church and the adjacent Hungarian Orthodox Ecclesiastical Museum are sure to impress everyone. At the Thália House Actor Museum, you can try on costumes on the "visitor stage" and take photos to share on social media, making the exhibition on Hungarian theatre history engaging for younger audiences too.

What’s the easiest way to get from the city centre to Miskolctapolca and Lillafüred?

You can reach Miskolctapolca by public transport using bus 20 or 20A. By car, take Soltész Nagy Kálmán Street towards Route 3, then turn onto Miskolctapolcai Road and follow it to the end. 

Lillafüred can be reached by the narrow-gauge train from the Dorottya Street station or by public transport using buses 5 or 15. The bus stop is located at the Felső-Majláth terminus of tram line 1. Get off at the Palotaszálló stop.

What free attractions are worth visiting in Miskolc?

Miskolc offers numerous opportunities to explore fascinating buildings and landscapes. The city centre has several notable squares, such as St. Stephen’s Square, Elizabeth Square, Szinva Terrace, Heroes’ Square, and People’s Garden. For a panoramic view of Miskolc, take a walk to the Avas Lookout Tower, where you can admire the cityscape and see models of Miskolc’s iconic buildings on the terrace, which is open day and night. While walking up the paths to the lookout, you can explore the city’s historic wine cellars, and at Horváth Hill, enjoy the leisure park, which is fun for all ages. At the foot of Avas Hill, you’ll find the Avas Reformed Church, offering an impressive view from Elizabeth Square. Inside visits are possible with prior arrangement and a donation. The Avas Arboretum can also be visited for free with prior registration.

In Miskolctapolca, a beautiful park system surrounds the boating lake. Walking along Pazár István Promenade, you can see the ruins of the Benedictine Abbey, and on Barabits Fülöp Promenade and its surroundings, you can discover mini sculptures. Entry to the Avalon Park is free, though services within the park are chargeable.

In Lillafüred, the entire hanging garden is open to visitors, as is the waterfall, which is a unique and free attraction. You can easily spend an hour wandering the winding stone paths. On the Lillafüred nature trail, you’ll find sacred landmarks like the Lourdes Cave and the Limpiás Cross. From Felsőhámor, you can take a marked hiking trail to the Zsófia Lookout, which offers stunning panoramic views. About ten minutes away from Lillafüred by narrow-gauge train is the Fazola Forge in Újmassa. At the Garadna terminus of the train, you can also visit a Forestry History Collection and the Garadna Grund themed playground.

Close to Miskolc, there are many interesting hiking spots thanks to the city’s proximity to the Bükk Plateau. Several caves are open to visitors, such as the Szeleta Cave and the Kecskelyuk Cave, both accessible via short hiking trails.

Where can I get a map of the city?

You can purchase a Miskolc city map or a Bükk map at the Tourinform office. Simplified versions of these maps are also available as free tourist brochures in our office.

Where can I buy Miskolc souvenirs for family and friends?

A wide range of souvenirs showcasing the city and its surroundings can be found at the Miskolc Shop at 16 Széchenyi Street. Items include Miskolc-themed fridge magnets, postcards, mugs, T-shirts, local drinks, Bükk wines, herbal products, and books.

Where can I eat traditional Hungarian food in Miskolc?

The following restaurants serve Hungarian dishes in Miskolc (not an exhaustive list): Calypso Restaurant, Kemencés Kisvendéglő, Aranykorona Historical Restaurant, Kispipa Fish Tavern, and Keszegsütő. For a local speciality, try the trout at the Lillafüred Trout Farm. 

Where can I camp in or near the city?

There are no campsites within the city itself. The nearest options are in Szentlélek, Bükkszentkereszt (Hollóstető), and Répáshuta.

Is the Tourinform office open on weekends?

During the summer peak season, the city centre office is open on Saturdays from 8:45 am to 2:45 pm.

Where can I store my luggage in Miskolc?

There is a luggage storage facility at Miskolc Tiszai Railway Station, open daily from 3:00 am to 11:00 pm for individual travellers. Unfortunately, it cannot accommodate larger groups’ luggage.

Where can I rent a bike in Miskolc?

At Avalon Park in Miskolctapolca, bikes are available for hotel guests. For everyone else, Borsod Bike offers rentals near the city centre. Electric bikes can be rented from Rent E-bike or the Tourist Park in nearby Szentlélek.

How does the narrow-gauge train operate, and where can I find information?

The narrow-gauge train operates year-round, departing from Dorottya Street station and terminating at Garadna, with a major stop at Lillafüred. It runs more frequently on weekends than on weekdays. On specific occasions, the train also operates on the Mahóca branch line. You can find the timetable on the LÁÉV website, at ticket offices, or by contacting the Tourinform office in person or by phone.

Where can I exchange money in Miskolc?

You can exchange money at Exclusive Change offices in Miskolc, located in Miskolc Plaza, Szinvapark, and the Tesco stores in Avas and Szentpéteri Kapu. Currency exchange is also available at the IBUSZ office in the city centre and near the Villanyrendőr.

 

Where can I buy bus tickets, day passes, or travel cards in the city?

Bus tickets and day passes can be purchased at MVK ticket offices. At the Tourinform office, you can buy single tickets and 10-ticket booklets. Online e-tickets are available on the MVK Zrt. website. Ticket vending machines are also available at busier stops.

What’s the cheapest way to use public transport as a tourist?

It depends on how long you’re staying and what you want to see. As a tourist, you can buy one-day, three-day, or seven-day tourist tickets, as well as weekend family tickets. If you want to visit Miskolc’s main attractions with free public transport and a single entry card, the Miskolc Pass is ideal for you. It allows free public transport and one-time free entry to baths, certain attractions, museums, or participation in thematic guided tours.

How do I get to the Cave Bath? Is it far from the city centre?

The Miskolctapolca Cave Bath**** is about a 20-minute journey from the city centre by public transport using buses 20 or 20A. From the terminus, it’s a short walk to the entrance. Currently, the outdoor section operates as Kagyló Beach, offering six pools, a sauna world, and weekend sauna programmes at one of Hungary’s most scenic and greenest beaches.

Is there night bathing in Miskolctapolca?

At Ellipsum Adventure and Beach Bath in Miskolctapolca, all indoor facilities and outdoor pools (in summer) are open until midnight on pre-announced dates.
The Miskolctapolca Cave Bath occasionally hosts atmospheric night bathing and music evenings.

How do I get to Avalon Park?

The Avalon Park is easily accessible by car via Iglói Road in Miskolctapolca. From spring to autumn, the DOTTO electric train departs from the large car park in Miskolctapolca, which can be reached by buses 20 or 20A.

Where can I buy family tickets? What’s the most affordable way to visit museums, the zoo, and the castle as a family?

Child and family tickets are available at most of Miskolc’s attractions. It’s worth planning in advance which sights you want to visit with your children, as this can help reduce costs. For example, you can purchase a Miskolc Pass tourist card online for both yourself and your child. This card allows free entry to the city’s main attractions.

 

 

Where can I buy tickets for Miskolc concerts in advance?

It’s always best to check the concert’s website or flyer for ticket purchase details. One of the largest ticket offices in Miskolc is at the House of Arts; its box office is located at 5 Rákóczi Street. Most events also offer online ticket purchasing.

When and where is the antique market held in Miskolc?

On the first Sunday of every month, along the city’s pedestrian street.

Are there guaranteed city tours in Miskolc?

From March to November, on the second Saturday of each month at 10 am, guided tours with pre-announced themes and locations are available for individual visitors, exclusively in Hungarian. For city centre tours, the starting point is the Tourinform office. For tours in other parts of the city, the starting location will be specified.
