Sümeg Castle

Sümeg Castle is one of Hungary's most spectacular and best-preserved medieval fortresses, perched atop a barren limestone hill where the Balaton Uplands meet the Kisalföld. It is the only castle in the Balaton Uplands that never fell into Ottoman hands during the Turkish occupation, making it one of the most important symbols of Hungarian resistance and bravery. Today, it is not only a historical monument but also a hub of living heritage, where the everyday life of the Middle Ages comes alive every day.

History: A Fortress from the Mongol Invasion to the Kuruc Era

Construction of the castle began in the mid-13th century after King Béla IV ordered the building of stone castles across the country in response to the Mongol invasion. The strategically important site came under the ownership of the Bishops of Veszprém, who expanded the fortress over the centuries.

The castle's most significant period was in the 16th century. After the fall of Veszprém in 1552, the bishopric fled to Sümeg, making the castle the episcopal seat and the region's most important border fortress. The Turks attacked it several times, but the defenders heroically repelled the assaults. The castle's decline began in the early 18th century: after the Rákóczi War of Independence, imperial troops set the complex ablaze in revenge. The ruined castle was finally excavated and restored professionally in the 1960s, with dynamic reconstruction beginning in the 1990s, giving it its current form.

Tourism and Attractions: Life Within the Walls

Today, Sümeg Castle operates as an interactive historical experience centre, where visitors can not only explore the walls but also get a glimpse into the lives of the castle's former inhabitants:

  • Inner and outer courtyards: In the large area, workshops host blacksmiths, wheelwrights, and potters, demonstrating traditional crafts.

  • Castle Museum: Exhibitions showcase medieval weapons, the captain's quarters, the torture chamber, and the castle chapel.

  • Panorama: From the battlements and towers, visitors can enjoy a unique 360-degree view of the Bakony Hills, Somló Hill, and, on clear days, even the Alps.

  • Stables and Armoury: The lower buildings of the castle house the Hussar Museum and an extensive collection of carriages.

Events: The World of Knightly Tournaments

Sümeg Castle's national fame is primarily due to its experience-based heritage preservation. The programmes aim to make history an engaging adventure rather than a dry subject:

  • Historical Knightly Tournaments: Regular shows are held in the covered knightly arena at the foot of the castle, featuring Spanish riding school demonstrations, archery, throwing of war stars, and real mounted duels to entertain the audience.

  • Medieval Feasts: After the tournaments, visitors can enjoy authentic medieval-style dinners in the castle's knight's hall or the castle tavern, where dishes are served in period-appropriate fashion.

  • Castle Games and Festivals: In summer, the moat and courtyards come alive with costumed parades, siege games, and craft fairs.

Sustainability: Tradition and Environmental Awareness

Sustainability is a key focus in the operation of Sümeg Castle:

  • Value-based heritage management: The castle's maintenance relies on a self-sustaining private initiative rather than state funding, ensuring the long-term preservation of the complex without burdening the central budget.

  • Supporting the local economy: Many of the materials, wines, and craft products used in the programmes come from local farmers and artisans, promoting the sustainable development of the region.

  • Preserving natural values: The Castle Hill is a protected nature reserve, so visitor routes are designed to safeguard the unique rocky grasslands and protected plant species (such as the Adonis vernalis).

  • Waste reduction: Increasing emphasis is placed on using eco-friendly packaging and selective waste collection during large-scale events.

When visiting Sümeg Castle, we recommend walking up via the castle promenade. It's not only a healthy choice but also allows for a slower, more mindful exploration of the area's beauty.
