The museum presents the everyday life of the Habsburg era, the imperial court, and the social and cultural issues of the historical period through interactive exhibitions specifically designed for younger audiences (typically aged 6–12).

At the heart of the Kindermuseum concept is the experience of "touching history." Children are not passive observers but active participants: they can dress in period costumes, try out court etiquette, and learn through play about education, health, or even the situation of children in the 18th–19th centuries. The exhibitions are didactically structured, engaging multiple senses, and simultaneously fostering creativity, critical thinking, and historical empathy. The museum fits seamlessly into Schönbrunn's comprehensive, all-day visitor experience, where the palace, park, zoo, and cultural institutions complement each other.

Contributing to Sustainable Tourism

The Kindermuseum plays a significant role in strengthening the social and cultural pillars of sustainable tourism. By linking heritage preservation with experience-based education, the institution helps young visitors understand the value of cultural heritage and the importance of its preservation from an early age. Its family-friendly, educational offerings encourage longer stays and a high-quality visitor experience, which reduces the pressure of mass tourism and results in a more balanced visitor flow within the Schönbrunn area. Additionally, the museum's programmes contribute to the sustainable operation of local cultural institutions, strengthen local identity, and promote the perspective that tourism is not merely consumption but also a process of learning and value creation.
