Balatonfüred

Balatonfüred is the crown jewel of the northern shore of Lake Balaton, where the nostalgia of the Reform Era coexists in perfect harmony with modern, sustainable tourism. The town is not only the oldest holiday resort on the Hungarian Sea but also one of the most beloved destinations for conscious travellers visiting the Balaton.

A Reform Era gem with Roman roots

Balatonfüred is the crown jewel of the northern shore of Lake Balaton, where nostalgic elegance and modern, sustainable tourism coexist in perfect harmony. The town’s history stretches back to Roman times, as the favourable microclimate and the healing waters emerging from the ground have attracted people since antiquity. However, the real breakthrough came in the 18th and 19th centuries, when Füred became the main meeting point of Hungarian social, political, and cultural life. During the Reform Era, the first steamship on Lake Balaton, the Kisfaludy, was launched here, and the iconic Anna Ball was first held in 1825. The town’s spirit is profoundly shaped by Mór Jókai, who found inspiration in his early eclectic villa built in 1870 and penned masterpieces such as A Hungarian Nabob and Zoltán Kárpáthy here.

The legend of the healing mineral water and the drinking hall

The true driving force behind the town’s development and fame is the renowned Füred mineral springs. The healing water, rich in carbon dioxide and minerals, has been alleviating the complaints of those suffering from cardiovascular diseases for centuries. At the heart of these medicinal springs stands the classical drinking hall of the Kossuth Lajos Spring, where locals and visitors alike still come to enjoy refreshing, natural healing water. Surrounding the spring is the internationally renowned State Heart Hospital, which serves as a key centre for treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention.

The grand hotel as a symbol of Füred’s bourgeois splendour

The most defining symbol of Füred’s Reform Era architecture and bourgeois elegance is the Grand Hotel, now known as the Anna Grand Hotel, towering over the Gyógy Square. The history of this building complex is closely intertwined with the town’s golden age, as its walls have hosted some of the most prominent figures in Hungarian history and literature over the decades. This prestigious hotel not only serves as accommodation but also as a cultural and social hub, and to this day, it is the venue for the magnificent Anna Balls held annually.

Picturesque lakeside attractions and nature’s wonders

The highlight of the attractions is the most famous promenade of Lake Balaton, the Tagore Promenade, which offers a unique setting for lakeside relaxation and cultural remembrance. The tradition of the memorial trees lining the promenade was started by the Nobel Prize-winning Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore after his recovery in 1926, and since then, many renowned heads of state, scientists, and artists have followed suit. From the promenade, there is a direct view of the majestic silhouette of the Tihany Peninsula, while the nearby Koloska Valley, just a few minutes from the town, awaits hikers seeking quieter, nature-filled experiences.

Balatonfüred: A beacon of sustainable tourism

Balatonfüred is also a leader in sustainable tourism within the Balaton region, showcasing how historical heritage and nature conservation can be combined with modern travel needs. Green mobility plays a key role in the town: an extensive network of cycle paths and a local community bike-sharing system enable completely car-free transportation. The protected areas of the neighbouring Balaton Uplands National Park ensure the preservation of biodiversity, while the beaches operate under strict environmental standards. Sustainability is also reflected in local gastronomy, where the organic wineries of the Füred-Csopak wine region and restaurants using locally sourced ingredients provide a low ecological footprint yet premium Balaton experience.
