Szanda and Szandaváralja

Szanda and Szandaváralja are two neighbouring villages nestled in the rolling hills of the Cserhát region in Nógrád County. Thanks to their unique location, Palóc traditions, medieval heritage, and rich natural environment, they hold significant appeal for tourists. The area is part of the Novohrad–Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark, making it an outstanding destination for those interested in geological values. The most iconic feature of the landscape is the medieval castle ruin built atop a 529-metre-high andesite cone that towers above Szanda. Constructed at the end of the 13th century, the castle played a key military role during the Middle Ages. In the 16th century, during the battles against the Ottoman Turks, it changed hands several times before being deliberately demolished to prevent further strategic use. Today, the castle ruins are a popular hiking destination offering breathtaking views of the Cserhát hills and, on clear days, even the peaks of the Tatra Mountains. On the slopes of the castle hill, visitors can explore a unique andesite column formation, created by ancient volcanic activity. With its dramatic, 75-degree-tilted columnar structures, this geological formation is considered a rarity in Europe. A dedicated geological nature trail leads to the site, with interpretive signs explaining the area’s volcanic history. In the Szandaváralja area, visitors can also immerse themselves in traditional Palóc folk culture. The local community places great emphasis on preserving traditions, as demonstrated by the artisanal jam-making that has become a hallmark of the village. Made from locally grown fruit following traditional recipes, the Szandaváralja jams have earned the GEOfood label and are available for purchase, offering a culinary dimension to the visitor experience. The villages are crossed by numerous hiking trails, including the well-known National Blue Trail, which passes directly through Szandaváralja. Natural attractions such as Jurta Lake, the Mária Spring, and the surrounding forests provide excellent opportunities for relaxation, nature walks, and birdwatching. The tourism offering of these villages aligns well with the principles of sustainable, experience-based rural tourism, making them ideal destinations for those seeking harmony between nature, culture, and tranquillity.
