Ruins of Szanda Castle

Szanda Castle stands atop a 529-metre-high volcanic hill composed of andesitic tuff, offering one of the most scenic panoramas of the Cserhát region. Located near the village of Szanda, the castle ruins are not only a relic of Hungary’s medieval past but also a prominent geosite within the Novohrad–Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark, where geological and cultural heritage intertwine.

Historical Background

The first written record of the castle dates back to 1247. It was likely built by Simon, a member of the Kacsics clan, and by the latter half of the 13th century it functioned as a royal fortress. Szanda Castle retained some strategic importance until the end of the 14th century but gradually lost its military relevance in the 15th century. During the Ottoman occupation, it was eventually destroyed and has remained in ruins ever since. Nevertheless, its surviving stone walls and bastions, along with its striking position on a natural volcanic cone, continue to captivate visitors.

Natural Features and Geological Significance

The castle's location is geologically significant. It was built on a cone-shaped hill formed by volcanic activity during the Middle Miocene epoch. The hill itself acts as a near-perfect natural fortification. As such, Szanda Castle is one of the representative geosites of the Novohrad–Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark.

The area is also rich in flora and birdlife, making it a favourite spot for nature lovers and birdwatchers.

Current Role within the Geopark

Today, Szanda Castle is a popular hiking destination and a highlighted attraction of the Novohrad–Nógrád Geopark. The Geopark promotes the sustainable interpretation of the region’s geological and cultural assets. The castle and its surroundings serve as a geo-tourism site, strengthening the area’s identity and supporting local tourism development.

Marked hiking trails lead to the summit, where visitors are rewarded with breathtaking views—on clear days, one can see as far as the Mátra Mountains and even the High Tatras.
