Hargitafürdő
Hargitafürdő (in Romanian: Harghita Băi) is a holiday resort located on the eastern slopes of the Harghita Mountains at an altitude of 1350 metres, administratively part of Miercurea Ciuc. This small mountain resort is one of the highest settlements in Székely Land and has been renowned for centuries for its medicinal mineral springs, mofettas, and crystal-clear air. Nowadays, its ski slopes attract skiing enthusiasts. Nestled in a volcanic landscape, the settlement is particularly popular among those seeking natural remedies and active relaxation. The numerous mineral springs and natural carbon dioxide emissions – known as mofettas – are excellent for treating rheumatic and circulatory disorders and have been utilised for health tourism purposes since the late 19th century. In winter, Hargitafürdő transforms into a popular ski paradise: several ski slopes, rental facilities, and lessons cater to both beginners and advanced skiers. The slopes are equipped with snow cannons and are illuminated at night, offering a longer season and diverse experiences. Besides winter sports, the surrounding forests and ridges are perfect for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and nature photography. Local highlights include the Hargitafürdő chapel and the Pauline monastery, whose recently consecrated new building offers a unique architectural experience and a place for visitors to find spiritual peace after a fulfilling day. In summer, the area becomes a quiet, cool-climate retreat with hiking trails leading to the Harghita ridge, Csicsói Harghita, or Madarasi Harghita. The therapeutic opportunities remain available during this season as well, with mofettas and forest walking paths aiding relaxation and regeneration. The settlement offers several guesthouses, chalets, cabins, and smaller accommodations with wellness services. Hosts often provide local dishes, homemade cheeses, honey, and pálinka, showcasing the flavours of the region. Hargitafürdő is an ideal destination for those seeking natural healing, tranquillity, or active recreation in the elevated world of the Harghita – where nature remains untouched, the air is crystal clear, and winter feels like a true winter.
