Székelyvarság
Székelyvarság (in Romanian: Vărșag) is one of the most unique mountain villages in Harghita County, where the closeness to nature, the traditions of forestry, and the warm hospitality of the Székely people form a harmonious unity. The village is characterised by its scattered homesteads, which, instead of being a single-street village, create an organic system of hundreds of smaller, remote properties, making it the largest of its kind in Transylvania. This settlement structure has shaped the lifestyle of its inhabitants for centuries – independence, closeness to nature, and self-sufficiency remain cherished values to this day. The crystal-clear air, babbling mountain streams, and rich wildlife offer an experience that is increasingly rare in our urbanised world. The village is situated at an altitude of 850–1,000 metres above sea level, on the western slopes of the Harghita Mountains, providing excellent opportunities for hiking, forest cycling, or even snowmobiling in winter. Varság is known not only for the famous pilgrimage site of the Jesus Well but also for the Csorgókő Waterfall, a special corner of untouched nature that attracts visitors. The local community's economy has been tied to the forests for centuries – charcoal burning, woodworking, and traditional craftsmanship are still living skills. Székelyvarság is also renowned for its handmade shingles: the durable roofing materials, crafted by local artisans from natural resources, perfectly complement the architectural heritage of the region. Visitors can gain insight into these centuries-old crafts and directly purchase local products – thereby supporting the economic sustainability of the community. Székelyvarság is an ideal destination for slow tourism: every visit here is a kind of reconnection with nature and oneself. The community aims for tourism to create value rather than impose a burden – for both guests and locals alike. The commitment to sustainability is evident not only in the protection of nature but also in preserving built heritage, implementing energy- and water-saving solutions, and prioritising local food. Those who visit Székelyvarság will not just find a destination but a community that welcomes them with open arms and whose members are consciously working towards creating a liveable, sustainable future – for themselves and for those who come to visit.
