Additional information

The Avas Lookout Tower, a symbol of Miskolc, is not only a landmark of the city but also a site of Hungarian historical significance. The first tower was built in 1906 to commemorate the reburial of II. Rákóczi Ferenc and his fellow exiles. Many people from Miskolc attended the event, and the first lookout, made of wood, was erected on Avas Hill. Adorned with torches and decorated with Rákóczi’s coat of arms, it was a central feature of the celebration but was not suitable for tourists, so it was quickly dismantled.

The second lookout, built in 1934, was designed by Bálint Szeghalmy in a Transylvanian style. This tower also met its end, first due to fire damage and later, according to some legends, when a Russian tank destroyed it in 1956. The current, modern-style Avas Lookout was built in 1963, designed by Miklós Hofer. Standing 72 meters tall, it serves both as a lookout tower and a television transmission tower and quickly became a popular hangout, especially for young people.

Over the years, the lookout's condition deteriorated, but in 2024, it underwent a complete renovation. Its original function was restored, making it once again accessible and enjoyable for visitors. The Avas Lookout Tower remains one of Miskolc’s icons, welcoming those who arrive in the city and giving everyone that feeling of, "We’re finally home."
