Additional information
Lovers' Bridge is one of Miskolc’s unique attractions, spanning the Szinva Stream and serving as both a pathway and a romantic landmark for lovers’ promises. While the Szinva, which has sustained the city for centuries, occasionally caused devastating floods—like the tragic events of 1878—today it flows peacefully, adding a romantic touch to the Szinva Terrace where the bridge is located. The bridge’s creation began in 2006 when Vilmos Fedor, then deputy mayor of Miskolc, sought a simple project to capture residents' hearts. Inspired by an article about lovers and József Attila’s poem Ode, he chose the picturesque setting of the Szinva for a bridge dedicated to lovers. Local artisans brought the idea to life, with the first lock placed as a symbol of love for the city. Since then, hundreds of couples have affirmed their love by attaching locks to the bridge’s railing. The Szinva Terrace surrounding the bridge is lined with restaurants, cafés, and snack bars, making it one of the city’s favorite meeting spots. Nearby stands László Kutas’s sculpture Miskolc Girls, adding to the bridge’s charm. The evening lighting along the Szinva, the artificial waterfall, and the fish swimming in the stream all contribute to the area’s romantic ambiance, attracting locals and tourists alike. The bridge not only embodies a modern idea but also revives an old tradition, as Miskolc had a “lovers’ bridge” near Sötétkapu as early as the early 20th century. Today’s Lovers' Bridge has become a symbol of unity for couples, with the ritual of throwing the keys into the stream representing eternal devotion.
