Additional information

One of the most notable treasures of Heroes' Square is the Minorite Church, rising in the heart of Miskolc. This Baroque church, built in the early 18th century, was founded by Father Didák Kelemen, of Polish descent, and designed by Giovanni Battista Carlone. In 2017, two new copper-clad spires were added, becoming striking architectural highlights of the square.

The Minorite Order played an important role in strengthening the Catholic faith in Miskolc. In addition to establishing the church, they founded a four-class junior high school in the mid-18th century. Today, the monastery building serves as a dormitory. The church’s entrance gate, created in 2000, features unique reliefs depicting St. Francis of Assisi, St. Clare, St. Stephen, and St. John Paul II.

The church has survived several historical disasters, including the great fire of 1843 and the flood of 1878. A plaque on the wall marks the height of the floodwaters as a reminder of the latter. Inside, visitors are greeted by a replica of the Lourdes Grotto, evoking the famous French pilgrimage site. The altarpiece was created based on a famous painting by Titian, and the interior is adorned with Baroque pews carved by the carpenter of the Minorite monastery in Eperjes.

The church serves as a venue not only for religious gatherings but also for cultural events, regularly hosting choir and organ concerts, offering music lovers a special experience.
