The University of Miskolc traces its origins back to 1735 when the Selmec Academy was founded in Selmecbánya. Established to support ore and precious metal mining, it became the world’s first institution for engineering education, predating similar German, Prussian, and Russian institutions. Today, the University of Miskolc is much more than a successor to the Selmec Academy; it has expanded its offerings beyond heavy industry training to adapt to societal changes. Since the 1980s, the university has offered law, economics, humanities, and social science programs. The campus, set in a unique 85-hectare green area, provides extensive dormitory space and demonstrates a strong commitment to social responsibility by supporting the education of disadvantaged students. The university offers bachelor’s, master’s, and postgraduate teacher training programs. It has received numerous accolades, including the Pro Urbe Award from the city of Miskolc and the Higher Education Quality Award in 2008. Selmec student traditions play an important role at the University of Miskolc, fostering unity and a sense of community among students. The annual ceremonial procession, "Szalamander," held during graduation, is a prominent event that continues traditions inherited from Selmec.
