Miskolc Gallery - Rákóczi House

The manor house and the name of Ferenc II Rákóczi became intertwined after the great war of independence, as the prince stayed twice in the building, which at the time also functioned as a guesthouse.

A brief introduction:

The central building of the Miskolc Gallery serves as the headquarters of the gallery's management and hosts both permanent and temporary exhibitions. One of its permanent exhibitions is a display in the Kondor Room, showcasing the works of Béla Kondor.

As temporary exhibitions, it features periodically recurring displays - such as the National Graphic Triennial and the Winter Exhibition - as well as thematic exhibition series, alongside presentations by contemporary Hungarian and international artists and art groups. The building also serves as a venue for scientific conferences, art promotion programmes, and interdisciplinary art events, thanks to its good acoustics and its charming, Mediterranean-style courtyard.

The Rákóczi House is, in fact, the oldest multi-storey house in Miskolc. This baroque building, together with the neighbouring Dark Gate, is a prominent and distinctive landmark on the town's main street. It was built by Ferenc Dőry around 1652 and remained the only multi-storey house in Miskolc until 1702. In the early 18th century, the manor house served twice as the accommodation for Prince Ferenc II Rákóczi, which is how it came to be commonly known today as the Rákóczi House.
