The manor house and the name of Ferenc II Rákóczi became intertwined after the great war of independence, as the prince stayed twice in the building, which at the time also functioned as a guesthouse.
A brief introduction:
The central building of the Miskolc Gallery houses the gallery's administration, as well as permanent and temporary exhibitions. One of its permanent exhibitions is a display in the Kondor Room dedicated to the works of Béla Kondor.
As a venue for temporary exhibitions, it hosts periodic displays - such as the National Graphic Triennial and the Winter Exhibition - alongside thematic series, and showcases the works of contemporary Hungarian and international artists and artist groups. The house also serves as a location for scientific conferences, programmes promoting the arts, and interdisciplinary artistic events, thanks to its good acoustics and its charming, Mediterranean-style courtyard.
The Rákóczi House is, in fact, the oldest multi-storey building in Miskolc. The baroque building, together with the neighbouring Dark Gate, is a prominent and distinctive feature of the town's main street. It was built by Ferenc Dőry around 1652 and remained the only multi-storey house in Miskolc until 1702. In the early 18th century, the manor served twice as the lodging of Prince Ferenc II Rákóczi, which is why it is now commonly referred to as the Rákóczi House.
