Additional information
The "Miskolc Anno" exhibition at the Herman Ottó Museum uniquely combines art and history. Through paintings, visitors gain insight into the transformations Miskolc has undergone over the past two hundred years. One of the most fascinating aspects of the exhibition is seeing how the city’s old buildings and landscapes are depicted in artworks. For instance, 18th- and 19th-century paintings already show the towers of the Minorite and Orthodox churches, while other iconic buildings, like the Mindszent and Downtown Reformed churches, appear without towers. The exhibition pays special attention to urban structural changes between the two World Wars, illustrating the impact of administrative shifts on the city. It’s intriguing to observe how Miskolc’s street views have evolved over the decades and to compare old paintings with the present-day city. For example, Heroes' Square now stands where the former public hospital once was. The gallery features two prominent collections that captivate art lovers and history enthusiasts alike. One is the collection of István Kövesi, a Jewish butcher, containing Hungarian works created after the 1870s. The other is from Dr. Sándor Petró, a Miskolc physician who collected both Hungarian and foreign artworks. This exhibition offers a wonderful opportunity to appreciate visual art while gaining a deeper understanding of Miskolc’s past. The paintings tell stories of buildings, the city, and the historical influences that have shaped its landscape.
