Deák Square

Deák Square is one of the key historical and cultural centers of downtown Miskolc, where the city’s past and present meet. The square was established in the 1920s when the city sought to honor the heroes of World War I, placing a statue of Ferenc Deák here in 1925. The statue depicts Deák, a central figure in the Austro-Hungarian Compromise and a significant influence in Hungarian history. On the north side of the square stands the Forestry Directorate building, notable for its Neo-Renaissance style. Built in 1929, it was intended to house the state forestry administration relocated from Upper Hungary after the Treaty of Trianon. On the other side of the square is a statue of József Lévay, a famous poet from Miskolc, placed here in 1934. The historical significance of the square extends beyond its statues. The Pece Stream once flowed here until it was channeled underground in the 1960s. Though the stream is no longer visible, its memory remains in the form of preserved bridge railings. Today, Deák Square is one of Miskolc’s main gathering spots, where city life, history, and culture converge. It offers pleasant walkways and green spaces, inviting visitors to enjoy its atmosphere.
