Déryné Street, one of the most unique and prestigious streets in Miskolc, is rightfully known as the “Borsod Broadway” among the city’s most quintessential locations. History is deeply embedded in its cobblestone pavement and the buildings lining the street, each telling a story of Miskolc’s past. The street’s former name, Blessed Virgin Street, referred to the nearby Minorite church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, located on Heroes' Square. This name change reflects shifts in the city’s religious and political life over the centuries. The street has long been tied to Miskolc’s theatrical scene. In 1823, at the dawn of the Hungarian Reform Era, the first stone theater in Miskolc was built here, becoming the city’s intellectual and cultural hub. Originally called Theater Street, it was later renamed Déryné Street in 1950 to honor Róza Déryné Széppataki, Hungary’s first renowned actress. Although the original theater was lost to a fire in 1843, the street’s historic significance endured, as the new theater was also established here. Déryné Street remains the heart of Miskolc’s theatrical life, with the Miskolc National Theater occupying much of its western side. The proximity of the theater lends a special charm, especially in the evening when wrought-iron lamps illuminate the narrow stretch. Numerous cafes and restaurants with terraces make this an ideal spot to relax before or after performances. The eastern side of the street features a mix of old merchant houses and modern buildings, reflecting the layered history of the city. Notable among these are buildings associated with the former Jewish community, including an old synagogue, reminding visitors of Miskolc’s rich cultural and religious diversity. At the street’s end, the Theater History and Actor Museum further reinforces its theatrical heritage. For locals, Déryné Street is not just a route but the cultural heart of the city, where every corner has its own story.
