Additional information
For centuries, Búza Square has played a key role in the life of Miskolc as a central hub for markets and transportation. Built on the site of former grain markets, the market hall remains popular, offering fresh products across a 13,000 m² area, while the square itself is a crucial meeting point, serving as the starting location for both long-distance and local bus routes. On its northern side, the modestly positioned Greek Catholic Assumption Cathedral serves as the main church of the Miskolc Diocese and is a significant sacred center. The history of the church’s construction dates back to the 18th century when Greek Catholic Rusyns and Slovaks settled in the area. The parish was originally part of Görömböly until 1910, when construction of the church began on land donated by the city. The church was consecrated in 1912, with its iconic gilded cross, a gift from the Serbian king. The building features Byzantine architectural elements, with its most majestic part being the richly decorated iconostasis, which is unique in Hungary for its depictions of Hungarian saints. In the 2000s, a courtyard was established, surrounded by a tall fence and icons, creating a space that prepares worshippers for quiet reflection, separating the sacred area from the outside world. Closely tied to the church’s history is the establishment of the Greek Catholic Miskolc Apostolic Exarchate in 1924, which is today the successor of the Miskolc Diocese. The church and the square continue to be central elements of the city’s spiritual and religious life.
