Additional information
The City Hall in Miskolc is a central complex of buildings located at the end of the main pedestrian street, comprising four sections. While most people think of the corner building when referring to City Hall, this location has historically hosted a variety of other functions, such as a tobacco exchange, police headquarters, military command center, and law academy. The oldest part of the complex had to undergo modifications to the window sizes to harmonize with neighboring buildings, and donations from local Miskolc women were essential to complete the construction. The elegant ceremonial hall within City Hall hosts official events and weddings. A modern glass atrium connects the three older sections and their inner courtyards, while the newer wing facing Szent István Square features a distinctive terrace and a high-reaching tower. This terrace, accessible only to City Hall employees and guests, offers beautiful views of Avas Hill and the main street events below. The building houses official offices, yet the glass atrium also serves as a venue for community events, blood drives, charity events, and exhibitions, aiming to make City Hall a truly welcoming space for all. The square in front, formerly known as Horthy Miklós Square and Council Hall Square, is a broad extension of the main street that opens like a funnel, continuing north along the old Mészár Street. Although small, this square has long been the heart of the city, surrounded by key landmarks like the County Hall, Catholic Gymnasium, and the Zárdakápolna (Convent Chapel). For the people of Miskolc, it remains one of the city’s most essential landmarks.
