Additional information

Pope John Paul II Square is one of the most beautiful public spaces in Miskolc, situated between the Diósgyőr residential area and the Roman Catholic Church of the "Name of the Virgin Mary." Once a disorganized parking area, it was transformed in the 2000s into a landscaped terrace that descends in steps to the Szinva stream, creating an oasis in the heart of the city. At the top of the square, a lighted fountain draws attention, and walking paths lead along green spaces adorned with flower beds, shrubs, and trees. Benches allow visitors to enjoy the view and the proximity of the stream. The middle and lower levels feature larger grassy areas and sections closer to the water, bringing people closer to nature. Named after Pope John Paul II, the square’s open, inviting design reflects his warm, approachable personality. Across the stream, in the church garden, stands a statue of Saint John Paul II, erected in honor of his 100th birthday. With open arms, the statue symbolically embraces the square, watching over its visitors. The Pope’s famous words, "Do not be afraid," resonate in this peaceful, friendly park, where locals and visitors alike can rest and connect with nature, soothed by the gentle sound of the Szinva stream.
