Búza Square in Miskolc has long been a hub for markets and transportation, but many may overlook a true sacred gem here: the Greek Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption. The history of this cathedral stretches back to the early 18th century, when the Rusyn and Slovak Greek Catholic community settled here and, for many years, had no church of their own. Finally, in 1910, construction of a new church began, and this Byzantine-style cathedral was consecrated in 1912. Today, it serves as the main church of the Miskolc Diocese. The cathedral’s most striking feature is its richly decorated iconostasis, which is unique in that it includes Hungarian saints in the arch. The stained-glass windows are also special, as they display not only saints but also the names of donors who made these windows possible. The courtyard and fence surrounding the church create a peaceful atmosphere, shielding it from the bustling noise of Búza Square and forming a sacred island amid the city’s activity. This cathedral is a reminder of Miskolc’s diverse cultural and religious heritage and remains a central part of the city’s spiritual life today.
