Additional information

The People's Garden is one of Miskolc’s most important public parks, playing a significant role in city life since the latter half of the 19th century. Originally known as Elizabeth Park, its creation is closely linked to Miskolc’s urbanization and the integration of the former Mindszent village. The park was developed with the help of military captain Lucián Musitzky and his team, who designed curved, harmonious walking paths adorned with ornamental plants. Later, a music pavilion and a statue of Queen Elizabeth were added, with her statue being one of the first of its kind in Hungary. Népkert has become not only a place for romantic walks but also a hub for sports and recreation. At the turn of the century, sports clubs built tennis and skating rinks on the former shooting range, and the Vigadó of t he People's Garden was constructed nearby, hosting dance events. The Vigadó building was later expanded with gymnasiums, serving both hospitality and sports purposes. Before World War II, the park was renovated with new lighting and pathways. After the war, an outdoor stage was erected, and the People's Garden became the site for May Day parades. Today, the park’s sports facilities have further expanded, now including an ice rink, an artificial ice skating rink, and a popular rubberized running track. In the summer of 2024, the Sissy Promenade was inaugurated, featuring new informational panels detailing Népkert’s rich history.
