The Avas Arboretum, also known as the Dr. Imre Adorján Pine Collection, is a true green oasis in the heart of Miskolc, having become one of the city’s gems over the past thirty years. Dr. Imre Adorján, a passionate local patriot and former chief physician, envisioned and created this curated garden to protect the area from development and provide a green retreat for both locals and tourists. His family continues to care for the nearly 1.5-hectare area, which is home to about 600 different conifer species.
A path winds through the garden, inviting visitors to wander among pines, arborvitaes, cedars, and false cypresses, with the scent of pine filling the air. The unique charm of the Avasi Arboretum is that it showcases the beauty of evergreens year-round, revealing countless shades of green. Among the trees is a giant sequoia from California, allowing visitors to encounter these majestic trees without traveling far.
The arboretum also boasts rich wildlife: red squirrels, hedgehogs, birds, and insects make their home here. In spring, a colorful array of wild bees and butterflies adds a magical touch to the experience. The arboretum is an ideal spot for relaxation, where visitors can sit on benches, rest in the shade, and immerse themselves in the tranquil embrace of nature, recharging body and soul. It’s no wonder many refer to this enchanting place as the “fairy-tale forest of Miskolc.”
