Wheat Square has played a significant role in the life of Miskolc for centuries, serving as a hub for markets and transport. The market hall, established on the site of former grain fairs, remains popular today, offering fresh produce across a 13,000 m² area, while the square itself is an important meeting point from where long-distance and local bus routes depart. On the northern side of the square, the modest Greek Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands, serving as the main church of the Diocese of Miskolc and a significant spiritual centre. The history of the church's construction dates back to the 18th century, when Greek Catholic Ruthenians and Slovaks settled in the area. For a long time, the parish belonged to Görömböly, but in 1910, the construction of its own church began on land donated by the city. The church was consecrated in 1912, and its iconic gilded cross was a gift from the Serbian king. The building features Byzantine architectural elements, with its most majestic part being the ornate iconostasis, which is considered rare for its depictions of Hungarian saints. In the 2000s, a churchyard was created, enclosed by a high fence and adorned with icons, forming a space that prepares worshippers for quiet reflection, separating the sacred enclave from the outside world. Closely linked to the church's history is the Greek Catholic Apostolic Exarchate of Miskolc, established in 1924, which is now the legal successor as the Diocese of Miskolc. Today, the church and the square remain central elements of the city's spiritual and religious life.
