More information

The Gömöri Railway Station, the smaller train station in Miskolc, has been serving passengers and freight heading towards the northern region for 125 years and is a true Neo-Renaissance masterpiece. Over time, it might easily escape attention, but due to its architectural value, it has been repeatedly honoured by the Hungarian State Railways with the title of “the most beautiful Hungarian railway station.” The station was designed by Ferenc Pfaff, a renowned architect of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy era, who was also responsible for the construction of several significant provincial stations. The building's harmonious proportions and intricate details, the clinker brick walls, the sandstone-carved capitals, and the terracotta reliefs all bear the hallmarks of the Neo-Renaissance style. The station's elongated, symmetrical structure and the distinctive oculus windows highlight the elegance of the building. The platform roof, supported by cast-iron columns towering over the tracks, provided passengers with protection against the elements. Although the station has lost some of its importance over the past decades, particularly with the rise of road transport and the discontinuation of the tram line, the building still deserves attention as an industrial and cultural heritage site. It was declared a protected monument in 1989, and as part of future renovation plans, it could even be transformed into an intermodal hub or a farmers' market, preserving the dignity and historical significance of the building.
