More information

People's Park is one of the most significant public parks in Miskolc, playing a key role in the city's life since the second half of the 19th century. Originally known as Elisabeth Park, its creation is closely tied to the urbanisation of the city and the integration of the former Mindszent village. The park's design was realised with the assistance of Lucián Musitzky, a military captain, and his team, who created curved, harmonious walking paths lined with ornamental plants. Later, a music pavilion and a statue of Queen Elisabeth were added to adorn the park, with the statue being one of the first of its kind in Hungary. People's Park is not only a venue for romantic strolls but has also become a hub for sports and recreation. At the turn of the century, sports clubs built tennis and ice-skating rinks on the site of the former shooting range, and the People's Park Pavilion was constructed nearby, hosting dance events. The Pavilion building was later expanded with gymnasiums, serving both hospitality and sports purposes. Before World War II, the park was renovated, enriched with lighting fixtures and new pathways. After the war, an open-air stage was installed, and People's Park became the venue for May Day parades. Today, the park's sports facilities have been further expanded, featuring an ice rink, an artificial ice-skating rink, and the popular Rekortan running track. In the summer of 2024, the Sissy Promenade was inaugurated, where newly installed information boards narrate the detailed history of People's Park.
