Starting from Tokaj, it’s worth stopping at the Turtle House Visitor Centre just across the Tisza River. From here, you can continue on a comfortable, well-built cycle path through Rakamaz, Tímár, and Szabolcs, all the way to Balsa. Be sure to take a break in the village of Szabolcs, home to Central Europe’s largest and best-preserved earthwork fort, which is a stunning sight in every season. Upon reaching Balsa, the Ecotourism Visitor Centre offers excellent recreational opportunities.

The tour continues along an agricultural road back towards Rakamaz, then alternates between quiet, low-traffic roads and the Tisza embankment as you cycle to Tiszalök. On the way to the ferry, don’t miss a walk along the Kis-Tisza nature trail, where you can get up close to the local wildlife all year round. If time allows, it’s worth visiting Hungary’s first Tisza hydroelectric power station in Tiszalök, and on hot summer days, you can cool off at the local beach.

Crossing the river via the Tiszalök ferry, you’ll arrive on the opposite bank, from where you can comfortably cycle back to the starting point in Tokaj along the Tisza embankment.

Practical information and tips:

• Road surface: Between Tiszaeszlár and Tiszalök, as well as between Tiszatardos and Tokaj, you’ll encounter unpaved embankment sections. During rainy periods, these areas can be more challenging to navigate, but they can easily be bypassed via low-traffic roads without significantly altering the length of the tour.

• Ferry crossing: Before setting off, make sure to check the timetable and operation of the ferry on the official Tiszatardos ferry website.
