More information

Heroes' Square is one of the most important public spaces in Miskolc, where the city's past and present converge. Although Miskolc does not have a traditional main square, Heroes' Square, located in the heart of the city centre, is one of the most popular community spaces. The Pece Stream, which once flowed here, played a significant role in shaping the square. After the flood of 1878, the stream was regulated and later channelled into a closed conduit. The remaining railings of the “Vereshíd” bridge still preserve its memory today. The square is surrounded by impressive historical buildings: to the north, the Baroque Minorite Church and the Földes Ferenc Secondary School; to the south, the Munk Palace and the synagogue; and to the east, the Post Palace. The square was developed after the First World War, when the city's residents called for a memorial to honour the heroes who fell in the war. Following the Second World War, the square underwent changes, including the addition of Soviet monuments, which were later relocated. After the political transition, the square was redesigned once more, incorporating an underground car park, fountains, and memorials, complemented by green spaces and paving. Today, Heroes' Square is one of Miskolc's most popular meeting places, ideal for relaxation and leisure. Its historical and cultural features ensure that both locals and tourists are drawn to visit.
